We downloaded the audio guides as recommended. We had no particular problems. However, the navigation information is not always very clear. It took us a while to adapt and understand how it worked. In my opinion, there weren't enough objects described by the audio guide in the museum. But it was good all the same.

Faster entry, but not as fast as we'd hoped, too many tourist coaches It would have been interesting if we had been informed on the site that there were too many buses and therefore too many tourists, so that we could have organized our visit differently. Visiting was complicated

A good insight into the history. We were approached by a very friendly German-speaking female guide and took the option of a guided tour to fully immerse ourselves in this historic site. fully immerse ourselves in this historical site. We were guided in a very knowledgeable and friendly manner. The audioguide is a good option but we personally loved it. Many thanks for the wonderful experience.

There is a parking lot next to the site. We were welcomed by one of the employees and the entry process is smooth. The english audioquide via key tours is a little misleading as it the routing seems to be outdated or is simply a little to short. We ended up double checking multiple of the spots the guides was talking about as we were not sure where to go next. The palace itself is an interesting location for everyone old enough to enjoy ruins and wall painting, so above 12 years according to personal interest I would say. It is a nice open place and allows a perspective on early civilization even for people with little to no history knowledge. I would recommend a visit but with a different audio guide than the one on key tours.

Our tour guide was really informative and passionate about the area and Palace of Knossos. A guided tour definitely added to the experience and understanding of what existed during Minoan times on Crete.

A very quick and convenient way to travel and get to know the city while also getting access to an important historical site as part of the tour. Recommended!

Follow a story, not just a map

With its sprawling corridors and maze-like layout, Knossos can be difficult to navigate on your own. A guided tour leads you through key spaces like the Central Court, Throne Room, and ceremonial areas in a meaningful sequence, helping you follow stories of power, religion, and daily life woven into the palace’s design. It also highlights details like the tapered columns and griffin frescoes, showing how Minoan design influenced the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.

What to expect on a Knossos Palace guided tour?

A walk through the palace’s most iconic spaces

Your guide will lead you through major highlights like the Central Court, the Throne Room with its mysterious stone seat, and richly decorated areas featuring original frescoes, such as the Prince of the Lilies and the Bull-Leaping scene.

A deep dive into Minoan life

Most tours last about 90 minutes, just enough time to explore the key areas in detail without feeling rushed, while still leaving you time to visit the museum or explore Heraklion afterward.

Optional museum add-on

Many tours include or offer add-ons to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where you can see original artifacts found at Knossos, including the actual frescoes, pottery, tools, and religious objects that once filled the palace.

Tips to note when visiting the Knossos ruins

Ancient ruins of Knossos Palace in Crete, Greece, showcasing Minoan architecture.
  • Arrive early in the morning, ideally before 10am, to avoid both the strong midday sun and the tour bus crowds that often arrive from Heraklion and cruise ports.
  • The signage within the site is minimal, so unless you're on a guided tour, it’s easy to miss key locations like the Queen’s Megaron or the lustral basins.
  • Mobile reception can be patchy around the site, so if you're using an audio guide app, download everything in advance for offline access.
  • Wear shoes with a good grip, as some of the original stone surfaces inside the palace can be smooth and slippery, especially near staircases and shaded courtyards.
  • Bring a hat or umbrella for shade. Knossos has limited covered areas, and much of your time will be spent standing in open courtyards or walking between exposed ruins.
  • Photography is allowed, but tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted inside the palace grounds, so plan your shots accordingly if you're hoping for wide-angle or steady frames.
